In-Transition The Spouseâs Vantage Point - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career My intent in using the word spouse is more inclusive, so as to refer to significant other or life partner as well. Iâm unfortunately qualified to write on this subject by being a married practicing career coach who has personally experienced a 30-month transition. Although I never ask my clients for personal information, many times they volunteer information about their spouseâs behavior during this period of transition, and I am appalled at the stories I hear. For instance, one client mentioned that years ago, while getting herself ready for a morning interview, she felt all pumped up, energized, excited, and ready. Just before leaving the house, she asked her husband, âSo, how do I look?â His response was âWell, to start with, youâre too fat.â That assessment ruined not only her day but also her interview. As shocking and demoralizing as such a statement can be, especially from a spouse, itâs not unique or singular. How can the spouse help? First, remember your wedding vow? It probably included the words for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in healthâ"the exact ideas that apply to support of partners through hardships such as unemployment. Most couples face lifeâs bumps in the road along the way, but it is expected that the partnersâ connection to each other involves a team relationship of support and understandingâ"not only through the fun times. A period of employment transition puts a strain on any relationship, including in the area of, say, finances, not to mention loss of identity. People identify themselves by the position they hold at work and in society. When that is lost, people feel as if theyâre nobodies. When job loss occurs, a couple should sit down, put their heads together, and strategize. Unemployment lasts for an unknown period of time, yet the previously committed financial obligations continue. The situation requires a plan of action. Typically, the duration of unemployment is temporary and should be treated as such. But things can get very difficult when the period of unemployment is extended, and the continued emotional support and encouragement must be there unequivocally and unwavering. Being in transition can make people want to withdraw and isolate themselves socially. The spouse should watch out for such frames of mind and prevent them. If not, such a mind-set can lead to clinical depression, and what employer wants to hire a depressed person? One more thing: please donât nag by asking why it takes so long to find a job. This is no different from asking an expectant woman in the last weeks of pregnancy, âSo, when is the baby comingâ? Itâs OK or even expected that the other spouse will be encouraging, but not become a career coach or counselor. Leave those aspects of job search to the professionals, because if done incorrectly, it can backfireâ"with destructive consequences. Suggest instead that your life partner volunteer. Although an unpaid activity, volunteering often results in a thank-you, which are two words that people in transition donât hear frequently. It can also lead to meeting new peopleâ"and even a job. A few suggestions Facilitate the spouseâs getting out of the house to job search network. Be emotionally supportive. Be positive, encouraging, and constructive. Let the other person communicate and be heard. Encourage your partner to get professional job search support. Remember that this is just a stage in life, and better days are ahead.

How to Lead a Team of Talented People
How to Lead a Team of Talented People Imagine that youâre now responsible for a group of people that are super talented and highly experienced, some of which are even more experienced and senior than you. Maybe some of them don't feel like they actually report to you. Yet you need to bind this team together to achieve an outcome, to achieve greatness. What do you do to get everybody on the same page and pulling together? How do you get everybody to buy in? This is the situation that Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski, was in when he was coaching the USA Men's Olympic Basketball Team in 2016. Not only was Coach K leading a team of NBA all-stars including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, he was also under the glare of national news cameras, and the team was expected to win. While most of us wonât be facing quite as much pressure as Coach K, there are three things he did that we can all learn from and apply in our own leadership situations. 1. Build Relationships The first thing is to build relationships with each of those team members. That means having conversations with them one-on-one to understand their aspirations and ideas as well as their challenges and concerns. Find out what success would look like for them and see if you can design a way forward that's going to help them achieve their aspirations, as well as those of the team. 2. Establish Standards, Not Rules Having rules and regulations means youâll have to enforce them when someone inevitably crosses the line. And being the enforcer is a tricky task, especially with very experienced, very talented people. So here's where Coach K's idea of setting standards is much better. Thatâs because he believes people donât own rules, but they will own standards. People donât own rules, but they will own standards. In Coach K's case, he started by proposing two standards. One being to look each other in the eye when we're speaking to each other. And the second being to always tell the truth. Then he got everybody on the team to agree to live by those standards. He then crowdsourced that set of standards by inviting the rest of the team to come up with standards they wanted to add. You don't have to come up with the standards all by yourself. In fact, it's better if you don't come up with all of them. You want to have the entire team sit together to come up with and agree to the standards. And then everybody's bought into them because they've helped create them and everybody can help enforce them. 3. Leverage the Talent in the Room The third thing that Coach K did that you and I can do as well is to leverage the talent in the room. In that prior example about setting standards, Coach K asked the players what kind of standards they wanted to set with each other. He drew on the wisdom in the room. We can take that a step further and recognize that the great thing about leading a team of highly experienced and talented people is they âknow stuffâ. You could be bringing out their knowledge, drawing out their expertise, and using it for the benefit of the team and the bigger mission. When you do that, your very talented team members will feel seen and heard, and also appreciated. You could also use individual people on your team to bounce ideas around with. Not only will those conversations be useful for you, those team members will likely feel even more valued, engaged and bought-in. When all of those things are true, youâre likely to be seen as a more effective and confident leader. Thatâs a really great thing for you, for the team, and for the organization. Conclusion When you need to get your team of talented individuals to cooperate and act in concert to achieve an important goal, remember these three lessons from Coach K. They apply more broadly, no matter what kind of team youâre leading. So take a look at how youâre leading your team: To what extent are you building relationships of trust and respect? Where do you stand on establishing standards as a group? And how are you leveraging the talent you have around the table or in the room? Taking these three steps will serve you well as a leader.
